In The Joneses, David Duchovny stars alongside Demi Moore as the head of a beautiful, fake family inserted into a gated suburban community to stealthily market must-have consumer goods. TIME talked to the X-Files alum about envy, gadgets and keeping up with the neighbors.

Your character says in the film, "Whoever dies with the most toys wins." Do you subscribe to that?

Not at all. [With gadgets] I'm about three years behind the curve usually. I do have a Kindle, so maybe it's only six months.

There must have been some gadget envy during the movie.

I thought the golf simulator was pretty cool. It's really expensive. You strike the ball, and the computer can show you where it's going to go. But I'd get bored with it in two days.

Does the portable videophone you use actually exist? It looked fake.

It did look fake. It's a low-budget film; be kind. I think there's a prototype.

What's your appliance obsession?

I'm a Luddite. I like sneakers. I have a lot - I don't know, 30 pairs.

Your character is paid to subtly push products by enjoying them. That happens to celebrities all the time. What's the most outrageous example?

For this movie, we were told - both Demi and I - that if we could bring in products to advertise, it would bring money to the film and make production easier. We would get paid more as well. It was an incentive I found really reprehensible--that I would go out and use whatever notoriety I have to attract products to a movie. But that could be the way of the future, that actors have to bring in their own sponsors.

So what did you bring?

I brought my sneakers.
