Why Gillian will be an object of Desire
Gillian Anderson is taking on one of the giants of the classic repertoire: Blanche DuBois.
The actress, as fearless and dangerously brilliant on stage as she is on television, will play the role in Tennessee Williams’s A Streetcar Named Desire at the Young Vic next summer.
It will be directed by Australian wunderkind Benedict Andrews, who has a revolutionary style when it comes to classic plays in the theatre.
He turned Three Sisters on its head — also at the Young Vic — so heavens knows what he and Anderson have in mind for Williams’s New Orleans.
‘It fell out of the sky,’ David Lan, the Young Vic’s artistic director, said. ‘This was Gillian and Benedict working together. They sought each other out, and went through what they’d like to do, and came up with Blanche. With these two people involved there are going to be fireworks on the stage!’
When the gentle schoolmistress Blanche goes to stay with her sister Stella and uncouth brother-in-law Stanley she behaves as if she’s a lady, but we learn she’s anything but.
Other casting will come later. I suspect Anderson’s commitment to the play will draw out top names as Stanley and Stella.
Anderson enjoyed success earlier in the year with BBC thriller-chiller The Fall. It will return for a second series.

Gillian Anderson and Vanessa Kirby star as theatre’s most famous sisters in the stage event of the summer: the Young Vic’s ‘A Streetcar Named Desire’
‘All right, you can take your trousers down now,’ says Gillian Anderson at the end of our interview.

Not to me, mind, but to Vanessa Kirby, Anderson’s co-star in the summer’s most anticipated theatre production, who kicks off our interview by attempting to drop her kecks to show off a recently acquired bite mark. The older, wiser Anderson – an international household name for almost 20 years – drily advises the puppyish young Kirby that she might want to wait until the strange journalist man has left before dropping ’em.

The pair became friends on the BBC’s acclaimed 2011 ‘Great Expectations’, which saw rising star Kirby playing Estella to Anderson’s poisonous Miss Havisham. But today the two of them could pass for giggling sisters, largely because Anderson is both more fun than you’d expect, and also about a billion times more British: raised in London and now resident here, she has a crisp accent that bears no resemblance to that of Special Agent Dana Scully. They ping off each other fabulously. ‘She’s the funny, dry one,’ says Kirby, cheerily. ‘I’m the overdramatic loser.’

And it’s a good job they can pass for sisters, because they’re deep in rehearsals to play the most famous siblings in the theatre canon: Blanche DuBois and Stella Kowalski, in Tennessee Williams’s iconic American tragedy ‘A Streetcar Named Desire’.

It’s the fastest-selling show in the Young Vic’s history, and a lot of that is down to Anderson’s star power. Certainly performing in Williams’s play was her idea. ‘I never actually knew why,’ she says, ‘but it’s almost as if the cells in my body knew that at some point in my life I needed to do this and that if I had not I would feel that I had failed.’

However, the very fact that ‘Streetcar’ is happening at the Young Vic, with the great Benedict Andrews directing, can be partly laid at Kirby’s door. In 2012 she starred there in Andrews’s landmark production of Chekhov’s ‘Three Sisters’. Anderson came to see it. ‘Everyone in the cast was like, “Oh, ohmygod, Gillian Anderson, she’s so hot,”’ cackles Kirby. ‘I said: “Actually, she’s my friend.”’ When she passed Anderson the director’s email address, Kirby jokily suggested she would be up for playing Stella, to which Anderson laconically replied: ‘If you can shrink a foot in height and age ten years then it’s yours.’ But after seeing a photo of the pair on a night out, Andrews was intrigued, Kirby was cast, and we can expect a slightly more imposing Stella than the usual delicate flower.

‘A Streetcar Named Desire’ is the great American playwright Williams’s greatest play: the story of fading beauty Blanche, who attempts to escape her demons by seeking refuge with sister Stella, but is instead demolished by her brother-in-law Stanley (played here by American actor Ben Foster). It is a great role, but it is not a happy one.

‘She arrives destroyed and yet she is still fighting for her own sanity,’ says Anderson. ‘She is fighting to hold on to that which is most familiar to her: class, superiority, history, family, everything that has made women feel safe throughout civilisation. She has come seeking safety and salvation and that’s the opposite of what she gets: she comes face to face with her destroyer in Stanley and this play is that trajectory.’

Andrews’s ‘Three Sisters’ famously featured a radical set. But both actors, who speak of Andrews in reverential tones (‘I don’t know if I could go back to doing a play with anyone else,’ says Anderson), stress that imposing a vision is not his aim. Instead, he tries to make an old play feel as fresh today as it did to its original audience. To this end, their ‘Streetcar’ will be stark, minimalist and staged in the round, without any 1940s period detail.

‘It’s about the clearest line between Tennessee, the actors and the audience,’ says Kirby. It’s a smash already. When tickets went on sale demand crashed the Young Vic’s website. Your best bet for getting in now is to enter the nightly ticket lottery at 5pm. When I ask Anderson what’s next, she wearily explains that she has to spend 21 hours of ‘Streetcar’s opening week recording an audiobook of her upcoming novel ‘A Vision of Fire’. She’s also starring in several TV shows (notably HBO’s ‘Hannibal’ and BBC/RTE’s ‘The Fall’). And Kirby’s star is rocketing, with forthcoming appearances in the Wachowskis’ ‘Jupiter Ascending’ and mountaineering thriller ‘Everest’). It’s almost unbelievable that Anderson, Kirby and the in-demand Andrews found time to work on a play together.

It’s still tantalisingly difficult to know what to expect from the production: though both Anderson and Kirby speak thoughtfully about their roles, they don’t bring Blanche and Stella out of the rehearsal room. But as I leave and Kirby prepares to drop her trousers, one thing’s pretty clear: they’re one hell of a sister act.

'A Streetcar Named Desire' runs at the Young Vic theatre until Sep 19.

NEW YORK (AP) - If you can't get to London in time to catch Gillian Anderson spinning onstage in "A Streetcar Named Desire," her orbit is about to get larger.

Starting Tuesday, Fathom Events, National Theatre Live and BY Experience will broadcast to movie theaters worldwide the fresh, critically cheered take on Tennessee Williams' classic tale from London's Young Vic Theatre.

The production, directed by Benedict Andrews, is set in present day New Orleans on a stage that revolves constantly, offering viewers both the shifting perspective of the characters and their slow turns into madness.

Anderson, who plays Williams' legendary desperate Southern belle Blanche DuBois, is joined by Ben Foster as Stanley, her lower-class nemesis, and Vanessa Kirby as his suffering wife. The spinning stage might sound like a recipe for motion sickness, but Anderson said most theatergoers get used to it.

"A good deal of people who see it say the revolve disappears for them and, if they notice it, it's to notice the benefits of it and the benefits of the perspective that it gives," said Anderson by phone from London.

"Every once in a while, somebody will see it and just not be able to see beyond the fact that it's revolving and it becomes an albatross around the neck of their experience. But that's the minority."

Anderson, the 46-year-old former co-star of "The X-Files," said that she has long wanted to tackle the doomed Blanche onstage and compares it to riding a stallion every night that she cannot ever tame.

"It's a behemoth," she said. "It sits on your shoulders like a bad dream, but if you can ride through the punctuation and the energy and the stamina and the beats, it is heaven, absolute heaven."

The production opened at the Young Vic on July 28 and the Sept. 16 show will be captured live and broadcast to about 1,500 venues in 40 different countries over the following hours and days, with some encore screenings expected.

Anderson, who hopes to take the production to Broadway one day, said there might be added pressure of having cameras capture her show, but there's not much she and her fellow actors can do about it.

"We're already live and exposed and the most that we can hope is that on that particular night that it's captured that we do one of our better performances," she said. "That's not necessarily in our hands. We'll show up and do the best that we can do."

Посмотрела по диагонали - не удержалась, конечно же Как много Джилл. Какая напряжёнка, сколько эмоций. И сколько слов, в конце концов! Интересная сцена - меня бы уже укачало от постоянного вращения. Немного режут глаз зрители, вальяжно развалившиеся на своих местах в первом ряду. У них там это нормально, наверное
Завтра повторю, но уже со звуком и от начала до конца Качество, на самом деле, забубенное, кстати.

Да, она была такая. Очередная драма в её /нашу копилку.
Джилл великолепно играет. Реалистично до чёртиков. Тема спектакля не моя, но захотелось пересмотреть фильм 1951-го года с Вивьен Ли.

Gillian Anderson stars in film prequel to A Streetcar Named Desire

Short film written by Andrew O’Hagan and also directed by Anderson imagines Blanche Dubois’s story before the events of the Tennessee Williams play

It was the hottest theatre ticket of 2014. And after a sold-out run at the Young Vic in London and an NT Live worldwide broadcast last month, Gillian Anderson is resuming the role of A Streetcar Named Desire’s Blanche Dubois.

She does so in a short film directed by herself, written by Andrew O’Hagan and made for the Young Vic Shorts series, which presents companion pieces to productions that have been staged in the Young Vic theatre. Entitled The Departure, the film – according to Anderson – “imagines the circumstances leading up to Blanche arriving at her sister’s house in New Orleans”. Anderson said that she and O’Hagan “have had the opportunity to delve further into the life of this iconic character and create something which can be seen by audiences across the globe”.

Blanche’s backstory certainly offers O’Hagan plenty of material for a prequel. In Williams’s play, Blanche says that her husband shot himself after she discovered that he was having an affair with an older man. Elsewhere in the play, Stella’s husband, Stanley, says that Blanche was dismissed from her schoolteaching job after an affair with a 17-year-old boy, became “washed up like poison” and was run out of the town of Laurel for her promiscuous behaviour. The plot of The Departure has not yet been announced.

Anderson, who previously directed herself on screen for an episode of The X Files in 2000, won rave reviews for Streetcar. The production, which closed on 19 September, was staged in the round by the Australian director Benedict Andrews, whose startling treatment of the play included the use of a rotating set and a soundtrack including PJ Harvey and Chris Isaak. “Anderson captures both Blanche’s airy pretensions to grandeur and her desolate loneliness,” wrote Michael Billington in a four-star review. “Her Blanche is a deeply sensuous, tactile woman.” Susannah Clapp gave the production five stars, writing: “The evening belongs to Anderson, who makes each phase of the DuBois disintegration her own.”

The Departure, whose cast includes Bruce Alexander, Suzanne Bertish and Rollo Skinner, will be available on the Guardian and Young Vic websites, but further details of its release have not been announced.

Я поняла, почему у меня его не было - моя система не дает скачать - файлы слишком большие. Форматировать систему ради одного файла что-то не хочется)))

с учетом того, что на мне кредит, съемная квартира и два родитела-пенсионера (и кот, который жрет больше, чем я), то за пару месяцев накопить у меня получается только на бюджетную недельку на кипре максимум))
в НЙ все сильно дороже чем в МСК, так что как минимум полгода )
а с учетом того, что у меня еще минимум три отпуска перед этим будет, ваще жрать перестану))))))))))

кароче чем то надо жертвовать, но я не хочу ничем))) дилемма )) )
