BEAN: Right, but while we’re talking about the Emmys, though uh, what was going on with Gillian at the Emmys this year [1997]? She has never looked more depressed than she did that entire night.
DD: Well, I think Gillian’s very, uh…
BEAN: Emotional?
DD: No, no, I think it is very hard for her in public. I don’t think she has an easy time of it with those kind of crowds and all that kind of attention. So I think she kinda… she tenses up a little bit, so it’s not really, it’s not really her that you’re seeing. It’s just, uh, she’s a little scared.

Gillian Adderson:

David actually called me. He was going to be writing an episode - somebody else wrote it, based on his idea - and directing it. He called me up a month or two before he was going to direct it and said, ‘Is there anything that you were never able to do [on the show] that you’ve always wanted to do?’ Which, first of all, was an incredibly sweet and generous gesture.

When they are ready for filming a klaxon goes off round the whole studio, then a bell, and that means silence. David’s dog, Blue, lies down, and doesn’t move till she hears two bells. She’s not been trained to do it but she’s been brought up on the set. She runs up and down the corridor, getting in people’s way… but as soon as that klaxon goes, she’s motionless.

We pretty much joke all the time. I mean, we need to stay serious and to stay focused, but the subject matter that we’re dealing with is so heavy for the most part, that it’s essential for us to have some comic relief. Both David and I tend to be very goofy and we take advantage of it, when we can and when it’s appropriate, and sometimes when it’s not appropriate.
